Washington, D.C., officially known as the District of Columbia and often referred to as Washington, "the District", or simply D.C., is the capital of the United States. Situated along the Potomac River on the country's East Coast, the District is under the sole jurisdiction of the United States Congress and is therefore not part of any U.S. state. The White House, symbolically the country's most significant building, has been the residence and workplace of US Presidents for over 200 years. The Washington Monument, dedicated to the first US President George Washington, dominates the Washington DC skyline. The Capitol, a globally recognised neoclassical landmark, is where the US Senate and House of Representatives convene. The National Cathedral is the most famous US cathedral and has been the location for many national memorial services. The Supreme Court, one of the country's most important institutions, offers tours to learn about its history and operations. The Lincoln Memorial, dedicated to Abraham Lincoln, was completed in 1922 and is modelled after Greek temples. The magnificent Library of Congress, the world's largest library, houses approximately 90 million archive materials. The Jefferson Memorial, modelled after Rome's Pantheon, is dedicated to Thomas Jefferson, the third US President and one of the Founding Fathers. D.C. has shed its former reputation as a dull and dangerous city and now boasts shopping, dining, and nightlife befitting a world-class metropolis. Visitors will find the city new, exciting, and decidedly cosmopolitan and international.
