Dresden is a baroque gem situated on the Elbe River. Often referred to as the Florence of the North, this capital of Saxony is a city filled with grand staircases, sweeping terraces, and large squares adorned with statues of saints and monarchs that exude solemnity. Despite being nearly destroyed just before the fall of the Reich in 1945, the city has rebounded to become a vibrant and artistic, not to mention stunning, destination. The magnificent baroque palace, Zwinger, now houses half of Dresden’s museums. Not far from the Zwinger Palace, you'll find the Hofkirche, the Catholic Church, which provides an intriguing contrast to the Protestant Kreuzkirche, located in the Altmarkt area, the historical heart of Dresden. As you wander around the Neumarkt area, you'll eventually find yourself in Frauenkirche at Noitmarkt Square. This circular church is considered a prime example of Protestant sacred architecture, featuring one of the largest domes in Europe. The church was rebuilt after Germany's reunification and now stands as a symbol of reconciliation. Dresden will captivate visitors with its beauty; the sheer volume and magnificence of the city's cultural treasures are enough to leave you breathless. And since Dresden is also nestled in a stunning river landscape, your awe will soon be paired with pure delight.
